I decided to become an astrophysicist at the age of eight. I read all the physics and astronomy books in the children’s section of my library. My family supported my voracious appetite for knowledge. My teachers assigned me lots of extra-curricular projects in the social sciences, which eventually sparked my spiritual quest. In my last year of high school, I studied the Thirty Years’ War for one extra project. I wondered why the Catholics and Protestants shed so much blood over trivial doctrine. I posed tough questions to my teacher, who sent me off to the library to read books on comparative religions. Read More...

Tunnel Vision. In 1971, the troubles in Northern Ireland were increasingly becoming a danger to me and to my six children. We listened to horror stories of suffering every day on the radio. Our personal horror story came the night I was attacked by two gunmen. One beat me while asking me questions about someone’s whereabouts. Although I wasn’t a Christian, I silently prayed for God to help me. Read More...

waynedurden.jpgI would like to take a break from our normal pattern of various subjects that we follow each week and share some thoughts on being thankful.  There may be someone who reads this and says we know all about being thankful, share something else.

Chances are we know much about the meaning of Thankfulness, but it's for sure as a nation, a people created in the image and likeness of God, very often we don't put into practice our knowledge of thankfulness.  As you read this little message, think about the scripture James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning".  Now that is powerful!  The bible further says, we are not our own, we have been bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in you spirit which is God's.  Oh! how we are blessed. The song writer says  "I am blessed, I am blessed, when I wake up in the morning till I lay my head to rest, I am blessed".  The bible says we live, move, and have our being because of Him.

In the Bible passage of 1 Thessalonians 5:18 we read "in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." To me a this is a very tough passage of scripture.  Know that we do not thank God for sickness, sorrow, etc.  However, in the midst of all challenges we face, we can thank God that He will take care of us.  Let's be more thankful.  Thanksgiving is more to me than a holiday, it is a Holy day.

Because of His Love, I am Thankful,        Pastor Durden
