Monroe Church of God

Side Lines

I've been thinking I would like to go to church, but I don't know anyone.

I don't know what to do, where to go, what to expect when I get there.  It's hard and it feels awkward to do anything for the first few times. Here are some suggestions:

Have you noticed a church near you or one you drive by often? If not, check the phone book. Call the church office. You should find a friendly voice to talk to. (Some churches don't have a full-time staff. If no ones there leave a message so they can get back to you.)

If you'd like, ask to be matched up with someone in the church, any of us would love to meet you even before you attend. That way, you will know someone before you come!

Also, we could pick you up Sunday morning, meet you for breakfast or coffee before church or at least meet you in the parking lot to show you where to go and what to do.

Stop by a church on a weekday and ask someone to show you around so the place doesn't feel so foreign when you come on Sunday.

Just show up. Check out when the worship service starts. Many churches have greeters to help you as you enter the sanctuary. If you'd like, ask them to introduce you to someone you can sit with.

The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the just. Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble. (Proverbs 3:33-34)  The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)

I say one final time in this series of thoughts on curses,  for the sake of your soul and those you love, don’t play games with God and don’t be a hypocrite because  God is keeping a record. Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. (Deuteronomy 5:16)

God’s word says “Honor your father and mother”…that it may be well with you.  Anything else than this puts you in danger of a curse.  (Deuteronomy 27:16) “Cursed is the one who treats his/her father or mother with contempt,” serious wouldn’t you say.  (Deuteronomy 27:19) states, “Cursed is the person who perverts the justice due the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow.”  A stranger could be a person without citizenship, if they are taken advantage of in any way, for example working them for little and other things; you’re in danger of judgment.

We will notice as we read God’s word that in Deuteronomy 27 and Malachi 3:7-8, that  there are a number of other curses listed.  The word of God is absolutely true; it’s a lamp to our feet a light to our path, Praise God, read (Psalm 119:89).  The greatest law on the books today is God’s word.

God help us to allow God’s word to be our compass to lead us through the Jungle of a world that we live in, God will do it, will we let Him?

You’re loved, Pastor Durden
